Bark Beetle Or Termites?


Spotted this tree in the canyon and there's been some back and forth about whether this is damage from the bark beetle or termites.  After doing a little research and looking at other photo's of damage, I'm leaning toward bark beetle.  What do you think?

Are bark beetles common where we are? I've never seen the damage from this perspective: I have seen groves of dead trees elsewhere. What is worse for our forests...bark beetle or termite?

They are common, although not always such a problem. The extended drought we've had has weakened the trees natural defenses and therefore increased the bark beetle problem.
