There's A New Kid In Town

Up until very recently, this space at Myrtle and Foothill was occupied by a toy soldier.  Now the toy soldier has joined his twin to greet visitors coming from the south into Old Town Monrovia and Frosty has taken over the north end of town.

Monrovia Train Depot / Gold Line Event

A kick off event for the extension of the Gold Line through Monrovia and out to Azusa will be held tomorrow (Saturday, November 21st) at the site of the Monrovia Train Depot (pictured above).  The event begins at 10am.

Notice anything different about the look of the depot site?  The depot has been cleaned up to look good for the party.  All the shrubs, trees, brush, grass, weeds and trash have been removed from around the station.  The first thing I noticed was that a large section of the fence surrounding the building has been removed.

More info about the event from the Monrovia Weekly here: http://monroviaweekly.com/latest-news/kick-off-set-for-gold-line-extension-to-azusa/

Debris Basin Cleared Again

As I mentioned last November, L.A. County was going to clear this every year instead of letting it get wildly overgrown again.  Sure enough, they were back out recently for a touch up ahead of any significant rain that we might get.

Holiday Parade Prop

We were working on something today that will be in the Holiday Parade on December 3rd.  Maybe you can guess what it will be but I won't reveal until it's complete.

Gem City Images Is On A Forced Hiatus

Update #1:  I should have thought of this sooner - cell phone camera!  Photos will continue, in an unprocessed direct to you kind of way.
----------

It was a good run of close to 900 straight days of original photos but it looks like the streak will end today.  It is not ending by choice.  My computer greeted me yesterday morning with a blank screen and then error messages.  I have a pretty good idea what the problem is and if I'm right, and I can get a replacement part, this will be a short hiatus.  If it's worse than I expect, getting back to normal will take longer.

No files or photos were lost, they are backed up multiple ways in multiple places.  I'm able to start my computer in safe mode, but that is insufficient for processing photos.  I won't be gone completely, I'll still see and respond to comments and emails. I'll post status updates - that new Monrovia Public Library is going to come in handy.

Cross your fingers and wish me luck that this turns out to just be a minor inconvenience. This site isn't over.  I shall return...

Christmas Decorations Going Up In Old Town Monrovia

A red and gold bow on an old style lamp post.

I'm glad to see it, but it's taking some time to get used to the modern fluorescent light bulb in an old fashioned lamp post.

Native American Footprints Hike - Monrovia Canyon Park

Last Saturday was the first of what everyone hopes wil become an annual late October event.

The 2 hour hike was led by Bear, a member of the park staff, and taught how the Native American Indians lived with the land 200 years ago.  The hike instilled a new sense of respect for nature and covered how they were able to provide for all their needs by using what was available from the land around them.

The hike was too short at 2 hours and demand was so great that a 2nd hike was added in the afternoon. People stayed around long after the hikes were over to continue to ask questions and talk.

When this comes around next year, don't miss it.
