I love this image. I'm curious how this effect is any different than just pushing color saturation either with a high saturation setting or in editing?

Laurie: Uh oh. A technical question! Here goes: I think the best way to answer that question is to post a regular single (non-HDR) image with the color saturation level pushed way up (from 0 up to 50) for comparison. I've added it to the original post. The image isn't really the best to show off HDR because there aren't really any deep shadows or blown out highlights but you can still see the difference. The overall exposure on the HDR image is much better. There's less detail in the shadows of the single image (tracks at the bottom of the photo), also the highlights (weeds on the right, tree on the left) are a bit much. The color in the HDR version is, for lack of a better word, more intense. You could get them close with a lot of time and work but the HDR software makes it very quick and easy. You can also control how normal or "surreal" you want the final image to be.
