Newts secrete the toxin through their skin. I'm guessing different people would have different levels of reaction to exposure but you want to avoid getting the toxin in you such as through cuts in your skin. You definitely don't want to eat one. The toxin can be strong enough to kill a human. If you do touch one, wash your hands right away.
