March 13, 2017: Since I started Gem City Images way back in 2007, the photos posted here have been (almost) exclusively of Monrovia. All my other photos have been posted to various social media sites like Flickr, Instagram and Facebook.

While that seemed like a good idea, in reality it led to a lack of consistency that was frustrating for me and made it hard to follow along with the latest photos.

So, starting now, Gem City Images will no longer be exclusively Monrovia. If you still want to see Monrovia only, you can always click the "Monrovia" label on the right side but hopefully you'll follow along for the whole experience.

Even though Gem City Images refers to Monrovia, I decided to keep that as the blog name. No matter where I go, The Gem City is where it all started.

Monrovia Fire Department Hybrid Car

A couple more photos from the recent Sustainability Fair.  The above photo is the Monrovia Fire Department's Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid car.  The bottom photo is the info sign that I've enlarged and tried to make the text a little more legible.  Click on either image for larger versions.

Cooked

Against my better judgement, I took part in a little trail work in Monrovia Canyon Park yesterday.  This was taken from the upper part of the Ben Overturff trail looking back over the various cities below baking in 110+ degree heat.  You can barely make out Catalina Island right about mid-photo.

Sunday Road Trip - Los Angeles County Fair

All those car photos last week put me in the mood for another road trip!  Today we'll head east to Pomona, California and the Los Angeles County Fair.

Welcome to the fair!  And not just any fair, the L.A. County Fair is the largest fair in the U.S.

Like all good county fairs, you can visit the animals at Fairview Farms.  The farm also has demonstrations, rodeo events and loads of info.

If gambling is more your thing, you can do that too.  Live horse racing at the fair from September 9th - 27th (Closed Mondays and Tuesdays with the fair).  Grandstand seating is FREE!

Another form of gambling available at the fair is all the fried, or Totally Fried, food.  This is where they take already unhealthy food and deep fry it.  Also available this year but not shown, chocolate covered bacon.

Of course, you can find all kinds of different foods at the fair.  Especially BBQ.  Lots and lots of BBQ.

After you've filled up on food, head for the carnival area where you can ride the roller coasters, ferris wheel, dark rides and all the fast and/or high rides that aren't so appealing to me anymore.

Other things you can find at the fair:

-Craft competitions and displays.  What would a county fair be without these?
-Indoor Shopping area/buildings:  Imagine 200 live infomercials going on around you all at the same time.  Not my thing but they are always packed.
-Various shows and live entertainment throughout the fairgrounds.
-The oldest and largest garden railroad in the nation.

Road Trip details:

Mileage from Monrovia, CA:  About 17 miles.
Travel time:  25 to 45 minutes depending on traffic.
Admission and parking: See this page.  Various discounts are available.
The fair runs from September 4th to October 3rd, 2010 and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

One more thing.  Why don't they have recycle bins for all those plastic water bottles they sell?  Shame, shame, shame.

'32 Ford At The Library Park Drinking Fountain

From the 2010 Hot Rod and Custom Car Show.  Continuing the series of cars from the show combined with a local Monrovia landmark.

If you click on the photo to enlarge it, you may be able to see the word "FARMERS" on the top stone of the fountain.  According to the book "Monrovia Centennial Review" by Peter Ostrye, the fountain was erected in 1905 by the Farmers Club.

1956 Bel Air And The Monrovia Bakery

From the 2010 Monrovia Hot Rod and Custom Car Show.

I've been photographing this annual show for 4 years now and the one thing I didn't want to do this year was to keep repeating what I had done before.  So, this year I had a plan.  Each of the photos I'll be posting from the show will feature a combination of one (or more) of the cars along with a local landmark from downtown Monrovia.  You'll get to enjoy some of the amazing cars and trucks from the show and each photo will also be uniquely Monrovia.  I hope you enjoy them.

What Are You Looking At?

It's Labor Day weekend and I've been laboring like crazy lately which doesn't leave much time for taking new photos.  So, in the spirit of the weekend, I'm going to take it easy and revisit my friend here.  This photo was taken in 2005 at Monrovia Canyon Park and this bobcat was the subject of my first ever post here at Gem City Images.

Here's one that's similar (but different) to some reflection photos at the train depot I posted earlier in the year.

September 3rd, not too early for a Halloween post.

Looks like Spirit will be setting up shop for the season in the former Circuit City store at 745 W. Huntington Drive Monrovia.  Even better, they are now hiring.  Apply at www.work4spirit.com.
