Stuck In The Middle Of The Beginning Of The End

Moving everything out of the soon to be demolished Monrovia Public Library.

I hope they include something from this library into the new one so it doesn't fade completely into history.

The empty corkboard seems so final.

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving decorations were a little hard to find. Most businesses went straight to Christmas decorations already.

This photo is of the Monrovia Restaurant.

This Used To Be...#4

Orange Julius. The stand on the corner is now Los Chilis Locos and you might also be able to see that the sign across the front of the building itself still says "Johnni's Burger."

This is an important corner for Monrovia history. The Certified Market hidden behind Los Chilis Locos used to be Pronto Market. Pronto Market was the company that would eventually become Trader Joe's. This would all come full circle when Trader Joe's moved their headquarters to Monrovia.

This Used To Be... #3

JC Penney. How many stand alone JC Penney stores are left?

It had 2 floors - a street level and a lower level. I would go down to
the lower level and buy vinyl singles for 99 cents.

It's currently: The 4th Dimension.

This Used To Be...#2

... an A&W drive up burger stand. We used to ride our bikes there in the summer and get megaphone shaped containers of ice cold root beer. Then we'd annoy the neighborhood with the megaphones.

Now it's the Mediterranean Garden Grill Restaurant.

This Used To Be...#1

Time for a little nostalgia. On this spot before The Gables, there was a one screen movie theatre originally called the Lyric Theatre. Later, when I was growing up, I knew it as the Crest Theatre.

Here's a photo of the old Lyric / Crest Theatre from the USC Digital Archive.

Here's a little more info from Cinema Treasures.

Harding Court

The last of a breed here in Monrovia - single story courtyard style apartments.

I remember there were others many years ago but I can't think of any others currently in Monrovia. Anyone know of others?

Smoke Filtered Sunlight

This was taken a little over a week ago when all the fires were burning here in SoCal. The location is the quarter mile trail in Monrovia Canyon Park where the smoke is readily apparent. And we were the lucky ones.
