Time to take a little vacation. After about three and a half years of posting a new photo every day, I think I've earned it.
Posting a photo as day takes a surprising amount of time. Add to that working a full time job, a volunteer job, working on a couple of projects for too long now, maintaining some semblance of organization to an ever growing archive of images and all the other responsibities of life and there weren't enough hours in the day. I realized I had to make a choice.
I could be obsessive about not missing a day or I could take a vacation and make things better than ever. Easy choice. So, for the next 2 weeks, I (probably) won't be posting any new photos. The next new photo will be on Monday, February 7th. I'll be here making some updates to the site, adding some info and responding to comments. Just not planning to post photos.
There are some goals I want to accomplish this year that I'm pretty excited about and taking some time now will help me reach them. It will also help me get back to the reason I started this site in the first place: To learn and to practice what I've learned.
Thanks to everyone for the continuing interest and support beyond anything I could have ever imagined. Be back soon!

Yikes!
That's Catalina Island rising above in the distance. Taken from the upper parking lot of Monrovia Canyon Park.

Our Town
Overlooking the city of Monrovia. Myrtle Avenue cuts more or less diagonally heading north from the upper left of the photo (Foothill 210 freeway) to the lower right (Foothill Blvd. with the First Presbyterian Church and Pavilions Supermarket). Along the way you can recognize some easily identifiable spots between those two points. The new library is pretty much hidden behind some trees but you can make out some of the front park area just behind Pavilions.
Click on the image for a much larger version. The picture is much larger but I've kept the file size fairly small. Go ahead, open it up and have some fun. How many places can you spot?

ITT Corp Deep Space Network Mural
From the Monrovia Insider newsletter from the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce:
The Deep Space Network (DSN) themed mural was created by students at Citrus College and partially funded by a community service grant from ITT Systems Corp. During the unveiling ceremony, Mr. Duveen Rivera, the DSN Program Manager said “The mural is a depiction of the NASA, Jet Propulsion Lab and ITT mission to support the myriad of deep space missions, past, present and future. Our hope is that it will generate interest in space exploration and science for students and the local community.”
The mural is located at 1400 S. Shamrock Ave. Monrovia.

Monrovia Canyon Park Waterfall - 1890 to 2010
It's not often I get access to a local photo from 1890 so I thought it might be fun to take a similar photo and compare the two.
The photos above are of the Monrovia Canyon Park waterfall. The one on the right was taken sometime in 1890. The one on the right I took on December 27th, 2010. About 120 years apart.
The most obvious difference is the waterfall. The whole area to the right at the top of the falls is gone and that completely changed the direction of the falls. The midpoint of the waterfall has shifted at least 10 feet to the right. It used to fall more towards the center in the current photo, right about into the center of the group of people.
Some other things that stood out:
-The lack of trees in the original photo.
-The changes in the boulders in front of the waterfall. You can get an idea of their size by the people standing on them. The changes may be as much or more from the building of the check dams as from the flow of water off the waterfall.
-The difference in the way people dressed to go hiking then and now. Click on the image to get a better idea. The woman in a long skirt down to her ankles. The men in coats, vests and hats.

The banner reads: Home of the 2010 CIF S.S. Mid-Valley Champions!
Giving you a little early reminder. The parade and rally will be held this Thursday evening January 6th. The parade starts at 6:30pm at Monrovia High School, moves along Colorado Blvd. to Myrtle Ave., then north on Myrtle Ave. to Library Park. The rally will then be held at the Library Park fountain.

January 2011 City Daily Photo Theme Day: Photo Of The Year 2010
This is the hardest theme day for me, and it happens every year! Picking a photo of the year is near impossible for me to do.
The above photo isn't the most technically advanced, it was shot with an old point and shoot camera that has long since seen better days. The photo, I'm sure, also isn't particularly interesting to the vast majority of you.
I just like it. The sky is blue with white clouds, the grass is green at the park and the mountains are nearby. A pretty good setting for a hometown.
Click on the link below to see how photographers from around the world interpreted the theme on this first day of the new year:
